Darts may look simple, but anyone who has tried it knows that consistency and precision are everything. Over the years, I’ve developed routines and techniques that help me stay sharp during matches, and I want to share a few key insights.
First, your stance and grip are foundational. I spend a lot of time practising my release and stance to make sure every throw feels the same. Small adjustments can make a huge difference over the course of a match, especially when fatigue starts to set in.
Second, scoring is all about rhythm. My first-nine averages last year were 93.42, and that’s no accident. Practising starting strong allows me to apply pressure early in a leg and control the pace. Break your practice sessions into blocks: focus on 180s, then 140s, then finishing doubles. It keeps your mind sharp and your throws consistent.
Finally, mental focus is crucial. Darts is just as much a mental game as it is physical. I work on visualising my throws, staying calm under pressure, and treating each dart as a new opportunity. Whether it’s a 170 checkout or a tight deciding leg, maintaining that focus can be the difference between winning and losing.
Consistency comes from repetition, attention to detail, and learning from mistakes. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s what separates good players from great ones.
